In her column on Oracle Capital Fund's effort to support minority-owned financial firms in Michigan, Cain quoted Timothy Bates, Wayne State professor of economics. Bates conducted a survey in 2003 which looked at how minority venture capital firms did in comparison to mainstream firms, which concluded that from 1989 to 2000 the minority firms performed better. Bates said that his update of this research is a carbon copy.
